When Was the Last Time You Got a Tune-up?

This past week was quite a blessing for the Weakland household. It offered us the opportunity to reflect on the past events of the previous year and to speculate about the joys that lie ahead in the New Year; but it also extended the opportunity for me to pursue some ventures which had been placed on the back burner for far too long. Among those interests, which included working on the garage (oh joy), was my quest to give our car a tune-up. Now, if you haven't noticed, I'm not the greatest mechanic in the world. However, with a little bit of luck, some greasy hands, and EVERY ONE STAYING OUT OF MY WAY, this little endeavor could be accomplished.

And yet, during the process of changing the oil, washing the windshield, and vacuuming out the interior, I started to realize just how important it is to keep this automobile in working order so I can extend the life of our car. You see, as long as I continue to keep our car tuned-up it will continue to be beneficial to our family, however, if I reject this truth then our car will eventually wear out and stop running and it will be more of a headache than an assist.

Beloved, the same is true in our lives spiritually. There is a tremendous need to be renewed on a daily basis because of all the wear and tear that comes from dealing with a world that has gone mad. Friends, do you need a tune-up? If so, consider the following:

Charge your battery – to be ready for every good work – Titus 3:1
Change your filters – to keep out the rudiments of this world – Romans 12:1-2
Align your steering – to keep on the straight and narrow – Matthew 7:13-14
Adjust your headlights – so others may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven – Matthew 5:14-16
Fill your tank – to keep your engine of faith running – Matthew 5:6

Though this list is far from being complete, it does give us some ideas about where we may need a tune-up in our own lives. Let us begin today to see the importance of keeping our lives spiritually tuned as we begin this New Year.

Allen Weakland
