IT IS WRITTEN

"Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified" (Acts 2:36 ASV).

Peter had declared the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy of the coming of the kingdom and David's prophecy of the resurrection and coronation of Jesus on his throne. The Holy Spirit gave Peter the word to climax the preaching of Jesus Christ in the words of the above text.

The Crucified Jesus
When questioned about what to do with Jesus, the thousands responded, "Let him be crucified!" (Matthew 27:22). Washing his hands, Pilate claimed cowardly and hypocritically, "I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it" (verse 24). "Then answered all the people, and said, his blood be upon us, and on our children" (Matthew 27:25).

Peter charged them with the crime of murdering the innocent One. He did not sweeten the bitterness of their conduct. They had done it with wicked hands (Acts 2:23).

The One that they abused as a criminal was not only innocent but also the one Savior of all men (Acts 4:12). Jesus means "savior" or "deliverer." He saves from sins by delivering from the wickedness of this world (Galatians 1:4).

God Made Him Lord
Slaves obeyed their masters in this world, but this Lord rules all the earth. Jesus is exalted "Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.; and hath put all things under his feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all" (Ephesians 1:21-23). He accepted no pretenders who called Him "Lord" while disobeying Him (Luke 6:46). Man can serve only one Master "Lord" ( Matthew 6:24).

God Made Him Christ
The word, Christ, means anointed one, and understanding its meaning requires reviewing the practice of anointing in the Old Testament. The priests were anointed to serve in their offices of offering worship for the people. Aaron, the first high priest and his sons who were regular priests were anointed by Moses (Exodus 29:7).

God instructed the prophet Elijah to anoint Elisha to be prophet in his place (I Kings 19:16). When the people demanded a king to be like the nations around them, Samuel reluctantly obeyed God and anointed Saul to be the first king of Israel. Then Samuel took the vial of oil,and poured it on his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not that Jehovah hath anointed thee to be prince over his inheritance?" (I Samuel 10:1). Lest there be a misunderstanding of that meaning,"...and all the people shouted, and said, Long live the king" (I Samuel 10:24). Samuel also anointed David to be the successor of Saul (I Samuel 16:1,13).

Jesus As the Christ
Every Christian is a priest (I Peter 2:9) and is privileged to offer worship to God through the one High Priest, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 7:25-27). As High Priest He functions as our Mediator (I Timothy 2:5) and Advocate (I John 2:1) enhancing our spiritual strength.

The Word who became flesh (John l:l4 was promised by Moses as our Prophet. "For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you" (Acts 3:22). See Deuteronomy 18:15). Jesus declared that all authority was His (Matthew 28:18).

Jesus admitted to Pilate that He was king (John 18:36). The Holy Spirit revealed through Paul that all the saved are citizens of His kingdom (Colossians 1:13) which is His church (Matthew 16:18-19 which will continue until the end of time (I Corinthians 15:24-26).

How many professing Christians trust the work of Jesus as High Priest, diligently study His teachings, and obey Him as King? Individually members of the body of Christ must function as the Head directs. Otherwise, the work of the Christ will be neglected dishonoring God.
