Proper Examples

Are brethren always ready to inform the souls of this world concerning how to think and what one needs to do in order to be right with God? From one point of view, I would hope that we all are ready to offer proper instruction for righteous living ,but on the other hand it seems that there are some who are more concerned with setting the standard than they are in exhorting others to submit to the ways and wishes of God. When Paul admonished the brethren in Philippi to think on things which were true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report (Phil. 4:8), he promoted things a bit further in his admonition by saying, "those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you" (Phil 4:9). Friends, although Paul uses himself as an example of Christian living, he does NOT claim to serve as the standard of Christianity. There can only be one true standard "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ" (1 Cor. 11:3). Paul was fully aware that he could serve as a proper example only as long as he himself followed the perfect standard of righteousness set by our Lord. When Christ was proclaiming the importance of righteous living in the Sermon on the Mount, he said, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matt. 5:14-16). Beloved, Christ was informing man that His disciples would be those who would live their lives in such a way that they could be proper examples for all to follow and would also glorify God at the same time. Let us never sway from our responsibility of proclaiming righteous living, but let us make sure that our words and lives dwell in perfect harmony, thus producing a proper example.
