Global Warming? Don't Be Duped (Part I)

We must refuse to bow before the god of "Science"
"Be Worried. Be very Worried." So warned the cover of a special issue of Time magazine published last year to address what has come to be considered the defining moral and political cause of our generation: global warming. We've been hearing about this issue for some time, but in recent months the hysteria of the climate crusaders has grown increasingly apocalyptic. They tell us the planet is becoming dangerously warmer. Never before in the history of the world has the Earth and its inhabitants been in greater danger. The icecaps are melting, the rain forests vanishing, the seas rising, the polar bears dying. And it's all your fault. It is morally imperative, therefore, that we make radical changes to curtail our production of greenhouse gases-particularly carbon dioxide-or the Earth will burn and all of our children will die. And if you don't believe it, you're not just uninformed. You're evil.

Man-made global warming alarmism is the latest and most influential manifestation of radical environmentalism. It is no longer merely a scientific or environmental issue; it is a powerful political movement, and a whole new morality. The sin is modern industrial society, with its man-made carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, factories, cars and planes. The "savior" is Al Gore-the champion and chief propagandist of the movement. The twin gods of this religion are Mother Earth and "Science." The clergy are the scientists, the priests who maintain the new orthodoxy. And those who question their dictates are heretics whose blasphemy must not be tolerated.

So forget about Islamic fundamentalism. It's not jihad that Time wants us to be very worried about. The real enemy is Western society, and all of us sinners driving our gas-guzzling SUVs, polluting the environment and putting the planet at risk by our insatiable appetite for fossil fuels. If that seems a little hard to swallow, all doubts must be dissolved by the alleged scientific evidence. The mainstream media is leading the public to believe this is simply a matter of scientific consensus. There is no debate; the issue is settled. All of the scientists believe it, and therefore you should too. For instance, the recent summary of a report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was touted by the media as further proof that the world's leading scientists agree global warming is real, dangerous, caused by man, and will have disastrous consequences very soon. "See," we're told, "the scientific community is unanimous, so it must be true." The real danger here is the assumption that scientists are the final arbiters of truth. Unanimity in the scientific academe is not proof of a position. (The scientific community has frequently abandoned doctrines it once maintained, i.e., geocentrism, the idea the Earth is the center of the solar system. And just thirty years ago scientists were warning us of a destructive global cooling movement on the horizon.)

But even if agreement among the experts is supposed to impress us, what the mainstream media hides from us is that in this case, there really is no such agreement. Forbidden as it may be to mention it, there is indeed significant dissent in the scientific community on this issue. Numerous climatologists with impeccable credentials have stated emphatically there is not conclusive scientific evidence (l) that the current increase in global temperature is anything other than normal cyclical variation in the Earth's climate; (2) that this slight change in the climate is dangerous and will produce the catastrophic consequences many are predicting; or (3) that man is doing anything to cause it.

One of the many who are declaring the Emperor has no clothes is John Christy, Professor of Atmospheric Science and Director of the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Lead Author of the IPCC. He states in the British documentary, The Great Global Warming Swindle, "I've often hear it said that there is a consensus of thousands of scientists on the global warming issue, and that humans are causing a catastrophic change to the climate system. Well I am one scientist-and there are many-that simply think that is not true." Professor Ian Clark, Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Ottawa, is one of those scientists. He states flatly, "CO2 clearly cannot be causing temperature changes." In a letter to the Wall Street Journal, Professor Fredrick Seitz, former President of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed in a letter to the Wall Street Journal that IPCC officials censored the comments of scientists in the much ballyhooed IPCC summary report (which was written by bureaucrats-not scientists) omitting statements like this one: "No study to date has positively attributed all or part [of the climate change observed to date] to anthropogenic [man-made] causes."
