Are We Ready For the Light of the World?

It's quite clear that many individuals have their own ideas concerning the purpose of the church. Some have expressed that the function of the church is to act as a welfare relief agency – providing funds to pay for things like utility bills, medical bills, gas to get to work and any other needs that may arise in a person's life. Others on the other hand seem to think that the church is nothing more than another social organization found within a community. While others think that the church is nothing more then a building set on some street corner with architectural details that are pleasant to the eye. And although these descriptions are by no means a collective characterization by society, we must be fully aware that not everyone has a true understanding about the purpose of the church.

Friends, it is vitally important that we all understand that the church of Christ is the body of Christ (Col. 1:18), made up of individual Christians (Acts 2:47). And Jesus Christ has given the church He built (Matt 16:18-19) a far greater role to play in this world than simply being a social organization to promote unity and goodwill, though these are certainly items which should exist within the Lord's church. Jesus instructed us to be "the light of the world" (Matt 5:14). Within this statement one can see how Jesus gave each of us a spiritual role within our individual communities. Thus, the Christian is to strive to be a reflection of Christ (Gal. 2:20), a fortress of truth (Phil 1:17), and a lighthouse whereby others can see Christ and glorify our Heavenly Father (Matt 5:16).

Though the world has certain ideas of what the church is, the church of Christ is different from what many expect. This difference arises from our commitment to doing what our Savior has commanded and not what men might expect or want. Though a portion of our labors are directed toward being benevolent (I Tim. 5:16), our main thrust (mission) is and should always be the imitation of our Lord as He sought to save those who were lost (Luke 19:10; Mark 16:15-16).

Let us, as the church, truly be the light of the world – manifesting the image of our Lord as we reflect Him, as we are a fortress of truth, and as a lighthouse that sits on a hill that cannot be hid.
