Pure Motives

Each and every time we find ourselves involved in some type of action or behaving in some particular manner, we have to acknowledge that our actions are stimulated by some sort of motive. A motive is that force that propels us forward in an action. These motives cause us to act and or behave as we do. However, we can sometimes be motivated by more than one thing. We may be motivated to achieve monetary gain; however, we may also be motivated by honesty and a great work ethic. When we place these motives together the result would end in having an honest job which pays for our needs.

Unfortunately, not all motives are pure. When Mary anointed the feet of Christ, Judas Iscariot said, "Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor" (John 2:5)? Now, on the surface this statement appears to be nothing more than a very harmless and honest question, but through the pen of the apostle John we also find this comment, "This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein" (John 2:6)

Friends, even in suggesting something good, Judas Iscariot corrupted it through his impure motives. In other words, his stated motive and his actual motive were in deep opposition to one another. Sometimes we "beat around the bush" instead of either stating what needs to be said or asking a pertinent question. Why? Could it be because one's motives follow that of Judas? Beloved, a pure motive is the basis for honesty, godly sacrificial agape. This, by the way, is the key to always having pure motives.
