Lord, Is it I?
As he observed, one final time, the Passover Feast with his disciples and instituted the Lord's Supper, Jesus prophesied of his betrayal by one of his the disciples. Mark tells us, "In the evening He came with the twelve. Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.' And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, 'Is it I?' And another said, 'Is it I?' " Mark 14:17-19). Judas knew the dark deed he was about to perpetrate, the most infamous betrayal in history, one that would seal his identity as the most notorious traitor of all time. And it must have disturbed Judas to know that Jesus knew. But the others, despite their close and unique association over several years, did not know.
It is worthy of note that the disciples did not say, "Is it he?"-pointing at the others around the table. True, impetuous Peter later said "Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be"Mark 14:30), failing to see that he was just as susceptible to falling as the rest. But there was a point while they were eating in that upper room with the Lord when each wondered about himself. That's something we need to do as well. It's right for the faithful to be confident in their salvation (1 John 5:13; 2 Tim. 4:7-8). But we also need to "examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves"2 Cor. 13:5). Constant, thoughtful, serious self-examination is an important part of the Christian life. This is especially important in light of the fact that when something is wrong in our lives, we have a tendency to blame others first before considering ourselves. Even if someone else may be the source of my problem, there is still reason to look at myself to see whether I am responding in the right way. Could I be handling things better? Could the problem be not only with someone or something else, but with me? "Lord, is it I?"
When there is a problem in my marriage, instead of impulsively blaming my spouse, do I stop and think about my own part in the problem? When I am having trouble with my children, even if they are behaving badly, am I dealing with things in the way that I should? When things are not as they should be in the congregation, do I blame the preacher, the elders, the deacons-is it always someone else? If we in our church are not visiting enough, evangelizing enough, teaching enough, serving enough, growing enough, holy enough, instead of looking at how others may be the problem, do I stop and think about where I am failing, where I could be doing better?
We know at times that others deserve criticism. But when something is amiss in our lives or in the church, perhaps we need to keep in mind the query of the disciples at that fateful last supper, and fall on our knees first and ask "Lord, is it I"
