Everlasting Security
Introduction
Boy, having kids is really awesome. As a parent, you get to experience all kinds of things; from your child's first step all the way to when they have their own first child. It just can't be beat. However, sometimes parents undergo things in their child's life, that if you had had a choice, you would choose not to encounter. Just like the other day, my son was out in the back yard playing on the trampoline. Normally, he would climb upon it and begin jumping. And yet, on this particular day, he decided to do things differently which resulted in him taking a tumble. Though his pride was hurt, physically he was ok. However, something came out of that event which surprised me. You see, Joshua came to understand, in his own little way, that he had security issues. In other words, he has realized that there are certain things he can be involved in and feel safe, while on the other hand, he also realized that there are other activities that must be avoided, all because he has no sense of security.
Friends, with that said, does this not all describe you and me? Is it not the case, that mankind willing and happily goes about life, performing daily tasks, all because we are confident with our sense of security? Think about it! Do we not jump into our cars, trucks, or other modes of transportation and never think twice about what could happen? Is it not also true, that each and every night we lie down and go to sleep and yet fully expect to wake up the next morning to start a new day? Friends, we do this all because we feel that sense of security in our lives. I'm sure every single one of us, whose lives were changed on the dreadful day in September, 2001, started performing our daily tasks never once thinking that our sense of security would be shattered.
Beloved, if history has taught us anything, it has taught us that sometimes the very things that give us security offer no real security as all! Just like our son, we need to realize that there are certain activities that offer security and there are others which must be avoided. Friends, let us not make the mistake of placing our eternal souls in jeopardy all because we feel spiritually secure in a particular faith even though it is not supported by Christ (Col 3:17). In the aftermath of that tragic event of 9/11, our government started evaluating our nation's security and found it wanting. Let us make sure that our faith is not found wanting – rather, let us make sure that our trust is based on a foundation which cannot be shaken (Heb. 12:27-28) and that offers a real and true security for our eternal souls (Heb. 6:14-19).
