"Do You Think She Was Planning On Getting Lost?"

In the early part of the month of May, before we made our move to the great state of Texas, Christy and I witnessed a young lady purchasing several items at the local convenient store. Included in those items where a soft drink, a bag of chips, and a road map. As she left the store I noticed she had an out of state license plate and immediately understood that she was unfamiliar with the area, so she was taking any and all necessary precautions to make certain that she would arrive at her destination and not get lost along the way. However, as all of this was transpiring, something interesting immediately happened after she departed. The two employees behind the counter jokingly asked among themselves, "Do you think she was planning on getting lost?" Well, I’m quite sure she was not planning on getting lost; in fact, she was taking the appropriate steps to avoid just such an event.

While in content, this event was probably quite typical for a convenient store, and yet what struck me was how rare it is to find this type of attitude, which was exhibited by the young lady, among those of the world when they consider their travels on a spiritual plane. Whenever I have had the opportunity to discuss the judgment with those of the religious world, the vast majority of them strongly affirm that most people will be found wanting in the end. However, when I confront them on a personal level concerning their own salvation, they often respond that they are not lost themselves.

Friends, God has informed us that "there is a way which seemeth right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Prov. 14:12). That being the case, why do so many travel through this life without the map which God has provided (James 1:21)? Why do they not take every precaution, like the young lady at the convenience store did, so as to make sure they don’t get lost? Do people plan on getting lost? I would surely hope not, however, by the actions of some it sure seems to be the case.

Beloved, it is imperative that we show people the flawless spiritual map found within the pages of God’s Holy Writ. The world around us is either following the wrong path or they have ignored His map altogether. If we desire for them to go to Heaven, then we must offer them the right directions. Will we be there to offer this courtesy or will we ignore their desperate pleas? No, I’m sure no one plans on getting lost, but most are because they have not sought the map that leads to the city whose builder and maker is God (Heb. 11:10).
